New Lots, Old Clay
Rolesville sits in USDA Zone 8a on the same red Piedmont clay you find across Wake County. On a new-construction lot, that clay is usually the biggest challenge. Builders strip the topsoil, grade the yard around the house, and leave behind compacted subsoil that sheds water instead of absorbing it — which is how you end up with a swampy corner and grass that won’t fill in.
We deal with that head-on: correcting the grade, running drainage where it’s needed, amending the soil before we lay sod, and choosing plants that can take the heat and the clay. For lawns, tall fescue works on shadier lots while bermuda and zoysia hold up in full sun. Getting the grading and drainage right at the start saves a lot of money and frustration down the road.
A Small Town With Deep Roots
Rolesville is older than it looks. It started in the late 1700s as Roles Tavern, named for early settler William Role, and was officially incorporated in 1837 — which makes it one of the oldest towns in Wake County. For all the new rooftops going up, the town has held onto its small-town character, something the Historic Rolesville Society has worked to preserve. The Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Mill Bridge Nature Park gives the community a stretch of trails and quiet woods.
Maybe the best symbol of Rolesville is the Toomer Oak — a tree estimated at more than 400 years old, older than the town itself. It’s a fitting reminder for a landscaping company: the trees and plantings you put in today are the ones your grandkids will stand under.
