The real challenge here is the soil. Most of Wake Forest is built on heavy red clay that drains slowly and compacts hard, so water pools in low spots and runs off slopes instead of soaking in.
That’s why so much of our work runs through drainage and grading. We fix the wet corner of the backyard before we plant, loosen and amend the clay so roots can actually breathe, and pick grasses and plants that hold up in this climate. For lawns, that usually means tall fescue on shadier lots and bermuda or zoysia where there’s full sun. Come fall, aeration and overseeding are the two jobs that separate a thin, patchy fescue lawn from a thick one.
